Producing reliable and cost-effective schedules for conductors and
locomotive drivers at Deutsche Bahn, the world’s largest railway which employs more than 240 000 persons is definitely considered to be an extraordinary challenge. The task, which essentially means solving one of the world’s most complex planning problems, was in 2001 awarded to Carmen Systems.
Considering the positive business effects experienced by DB and the fact
that both crew categories are now in production it is unmistakable that
the implementation has been, to say the least, a major achievement.
The relation with Green Cargo, the largest railway cargo carrier in
Sweden, has since its origin in 1995 covered increasing areas. All with
a bottom-line impact enabling Green Cargo to significantly improve the
operational efficiency. One of the fruits resulting from the partnership
is the unique real-time system VADIS (Carmen Rolling Stock Distributor)
that autonomously controls and optimizes the distribution of empty
freight cars. Annual savings from this system alone are estimated to
7.8M euro. These are mainly due to:
- Decreased capital costs
- Decreased maintenance costs
- Reduced staffing requirements
Green Cargo also successfully uses Carmen Crew Pairing, Carmen Crew
Rostering and Carmen Fleet Assignment.
