On 13 Sep, Mattias Grönkvist defended his Ph.D. thesis
‘The Tail Assignment Problem’ at Chalmers University
of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden. The faculty opponent
was professor Cynthia Barnhart from the Massachussets
Institute of Technology (MIT). In the thesis, a
new fleet management model is presented, along with
a number of possible solution approaches and example
planning scenarios. The new fleet management model
is the foundation of Carmen’s Tail Assignment product.
–Unlike most previous approaches to fleet assignment
and aircraft routing, our model can be used throughout
the planning process. It is versatile enough to handle a
number of constraint types and optimization criteria, and
the thesis demonstrates how it can be used both for
commercial and operational planning.
–To adapt to different planning
scenarios, the optimizer
must be able to find solutions
quickly, and to find close to
optimal solutions. To accomplish
this, classical mathematical
programming techniques
have been combined with constraint
programming techniques, creating a unique
hybrid solution approach.
– I will continue to work on improving the Tail Assignment
product. I will also work with optimization development
for other products.
